Coat: Consists of medium-length hair with a softer undercoat. Color can be reddish-orange. Typically there is a blaze with white markings on the chest, tip of the tail, and the feet.

Overview: The Toller is highly intelligent, alert, outgoing, and ready for action, though not to the point of nervousness or hyperactivity. He is affectionate and loving with family members and is good with children, showing patience.

Character: This dog is high-spirited, lively, friendly, and intelligent.

Temperament: This dog gets along well with children, other dogs, and any household pets.

Care: Regular grooming with a brush is required.

Training: This breed is eager to work for its handlers, so training is usually fairly simple. It learns quickly.

Activity: Swimming and retrieving are its favorite activities. It needs a lot of exercise.

 

To “toll” in duck hunting parlance is to entice or lure, a rather archaic definition of the word most associate with road and bridge fees and ringing bells. Waterfowl hunters generally wait from a concealed spot for ducks or geese to come close enough for a shot. Hunters fortunate enough to have a Toller along can hasten the process by using the dog’s playful antics to catch the attention of inquisitive birds. The hunter tosses a tolling stick from his hiding place towards the shore. The dog goes after the stick with great enthusiasm, tail wagging and feet dancing. The flashy white markings on his chest, feet, and tail-tip accentuate the effect as he retrieves the stick time after time, enticing the birds closer and closer to shore to get a better look at this remarkable performance.
When the birds are close enough for a clean shot, the hunter calls the dog back to his side until there are birds to bring in, and the Toller momentarily shucks his playful persona to become a strong and able retriever.

Tollers are gentle with children but may be aloof with strange adults, a trait that makes them reliable as watchdogs (but not guard dogs). When they look into your eyes, you know they love you (or maybe they are hungry, or want outside, or you’ve hidden the ball again…..),  Versatile and adaptable-able to go from couch potato to screaming retriever in mere seconds. Natural hunting abilities easier for someone like me who doesn’t spend much time training. The Toller is an energetic dog, and needs plenty of exercise. While they aren’t quite as hyperactive as some breeds, they do need lots of exercise, physical and mental. Tollers are gentle and kindly and many can be quite outgoing, but if you are looking for a dog with that Lab “I just met you and You’re my best friend” attitude, the Toller may be wrong for you.  The Toller will greet strangers happily, but generally reserve true enthusiasm for their family and special people. Tollers are a hunting breed, and are bred to be working dogs.  They have a frantic drive to work, and will retrieve until your arm is ready to fall off. Tendonitis in Toller owners is not unusual.  This dog is  a retrieving fool who will climb trees to get a bumper stuck there.  This may sound cute now, but after the 400^th throw, you may change your mind. Many Tollers have a penetrating scream which they produce to indicate excitement and eagerness.  The scream is usually a reaction to an exciting stimulus. Tollers do blow their coat seasonally, and they are dogs who like to swim and roll and wallow.  They are not the dog for the fastidious or the allergic.

                         

 

Nova Scotia duck tolling retriver - skraćeno Toller, je šarmantan, živahan pas, donositelj vodene divljači srednje veličine (visina od 43-53 cm, +-3cm) i lagani za održavanje i držanje, izvrsni ljubimci i sposobni za natjecanja u poslušnosti, agilityju i lovu. Veličina i narav čine ih dobrim ljubimcima za aktivne obitelji, kao i odličnim pomoćnicima za lovca.

Tollerima treba dosta dnevne aktivnosti, vole kad im se baca frizbi, izvrsni su u poslušnosti i agilityju zato jer vole raditi. pas srednje veličine, snažan, kompaktan, uravnotežen, mišićav, srednje teškog do teškog kostura. Vrlo je agilan, uvijek na oprezu i uporan. Boja nosa treba se slagati s bojom krzna ili može biti crna. Toller je uzgojen za donošenje divljači iz hladne vode i mora imati vodootporno dvostruko krzno srednje dužine, s mekšom, gustom poddlakom. Četkanje nekoliko puta tjedno dovoljno je da bi se uklonile travke i ostalo što pas pokupi tijekom šetnje i rada. Ako razmišljate o nabavci “malog crvenog retriveraškog stroja” imajte na umu da je toller je velika obveza za svog vlasnika, i u fizičkom i psihičkom smislu. Kad vas gledaju u oči, znate da vas vole (ili su gladni, ili žele vani, ili ste im opet sakrili lopticu...). Svestrani i prilagodljivi – pretvaraju se iz lijenčine u vrištećeg retrivera u sekundi. Najbolji podizači raspoloženja na svijetu. Dok im bacate lopticu ili igračku, letećim skokovima odlaze po nju i vraćaju se da im je opet bacite, i jednostavno morate osjetiti njihovu životnu radost. Fantastično komuniciraju s ljudima, na mnoge načine. Savršena veličina, ni veliki ni mali. Laka motivacija s hranom, igračkama ili bilo čime što se miče. Prirođene lovne sposobnosti koje odgovaraju onima koji nemaju vremena za treniranje. Njihove čuvarske sposobnosti, dok, s druge strane, nisu previše lajavi. Tolleri koji redovno vježbaju i izmaraju se igrom, trčanjem i radnim zadacima su kod kuće mirni i zadovoljni i nisu skloni destrukciji koja nastaje uslijed dosade. Ovo je izuzetno inteligentna pasmina. Ovim psima potrebna je barem osnovna dresura, a mnogi vlasnici tollera su aktivni u agilityju, lovu, flyballu, traganju, natjecanjima u poslušnosti i slično. Tolleri obožavaju raditi, ali nije ih uvijek lako trenirati kao neke druge pasmine. Treba im izazov i moraju doista biti vrlo zauzeti, inače će im postati dosadno i više neće obraćati pažnju. Također, možda će nešto pokušati izvesti na desetak načina prije nego dođu do željenog cilja, odnosno, onog što tražite od njih. Ako tolleru date prst, uzet će cijelu ruku i vratiti se po još. Prepametni su da mi se otvoreno upuštali u bitku za dominaciju, ali nanjušit će svaku slabost i iskoristiti je.

Oni su nježni i ljubazni prema djeci, neki od njih mogu biti vrlo prijateljski raspoloženi prema nepoznatim ljudima, ali uglavnom nemaju labradorski stav “upravo sam te upoznao i ti si moj najbolji frend”. Istinski entuzijazam toller će sačuvati za svoju obitelj i posebne prijatelje.

Tolleri su lovna pasmina i uzgajani da budu radni psi. Imaju ludu želju za radom i donosit će bačeno dok vam ruka ne otpadne, pa i preko toga!  Mnogi tolleri od uzbuđenja i želje za radom ispuštaju prodoran vrisak koji je karakterističan za tu pasminu.  Tolleri uglavnom upozoravaju na dolazak stranaca, ali nisu neki osobiti psi čuvari. Tolleri se linjaju sezonski i psi su koji vole plivati, valjati se po svemu, pa i u blatu. Nisu za čistunce ili alergične osobe.
